Developing an open source MBE tool suite based on the Papyrus platform
The Papyrus Industry Consortium (IC) was established as part of the PolarSys working group to collaborate on the development of an advanced, industry-ready, open source, model-based engineering (MBE) tool suite, and open tool platform.
Papyrus is the PolarSys solution for SysML and UML modeling, used extensively in large industrial solutions. Based on the Eclipse platform, it provides lifecycle integration through both Eclipse-based offerings and domain-specific tools contributed by partners.
The industry consortium will drive a community of users, software product and services suppliers, and researchers. It will encompass organizations ranging from those developing Enterprise Software to those developing in the domains of IoT (Internet of Things) and Cyber-Physical Systems.
Open Innovation, Open Source Governance
As part of the PolarSys Working Group, the Papyrus IC benefits from access to an established community and its development, outreach, and legal resources. It leverages PolarSys initiatives in all these areas to focus specifically on the challenges of the MBE domain.
In addition to financing joint software development, the Consortium will promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the community. The collaboration will provide a focus for developers from industry and research to create a wide range of MBE tool capabilities. It will foster initiatives to support industry standardization, research, development, and education in the MBE domain.
The Papyrus Industry Consortium structure includes leadership through a Steering Committee which reports to a General Assembly. Product Management, Architecture, and Research/Academic committees provide focused forums for development and initiatives in these areas.
The founding members have proposed an initial outline of the technical scope of the Papyrus IC, which encompasses the key aspects of modeling in practice.

Papyrus technology uses the industry standards UML, SysML, and Domain Specific Modeling Languages (DSML), such as UML-RT and xtUML. In this way, Papyrus can be envisioned as a DSML workbench.
The expectation is that the Technical Scope will be continuously refined and developed by participant members.
